What is a travel humidor?
Travel humidors are the ideal solution for taking your cherished cigars along with you and taking the best possible care of them, no matter where you go. They function in the same way as a classic humidor. Before purchase, you should ask yourself "How long do I typically travel for, and how many cigars would I need during the trip?" For day trips metal tubes often suffice, but for weekend trips or holidays the purchase of a travel humidor may be your best option.
There are two important points to consider when shopping around:
1. Moisture regulation is more challenging in small travel humidors, as there is usually less space in which the air can circulate. Ideally, the cigars should not have any direct contact with the humidifying agent (vents of a humidifier... etc). Travel humidors lined with Spanish cedar have the advantage that the internal walls act as a moisture buffer and help to balance out the fluctuations in humidity level. If the travel humidor has not been used for a long period of time, the Spanish cedar inside should be wiped with a damp cloth, to restore its moisture.
2. Any movement of the cigars inside the travel humidor should be restricted somehow. Without this, the constant movement could lead to permanent damage of the wrapper. In many travel humidors the cigars are kept apart using foam separators, effectively preventing damage to the cigar.
Travel humidors with hard plastic shells, like the popular Cigar Caddy, are impervious to any knocks or bumps and protect cigars well. Nevertheless, it is also true that travel humidors are best lined with Spanish cedar.
