What accessories does a cigar smoker categorically need?
In the 1970s, Stanwell tobacco coined a memorable slogan: "Three things needs man: Fire – Pipe – Stanwell."
We can recommend something in a similar vein to any aficionado who doesn't want to be weighed down by too many gadgets. In the beginning man needs: Fire – Cutter – Cigar.
Most people will already have a lighter of some type in their home. Inexpensive, disposable lighters tend to heat up, burning your fingers if they stay lit for any length of time. For cigars, this can prove to be a problem because, in contrast to the cigarette, the process of lighting a cigar can take a full minute or more.
High-quality lighters, such as those made by S.T. Dupont, don't present the same problem and can remain lit for a long time. Special jet flame lighters for cigars are now also available at very reasonable prices and have the extra advantage of a strong, laser flame that can ignite a cigar quickly and in any weather. In addition, many cigar lighters have an integrated cigar punch, which means that the beginner is perfectly equipped with the purchase of just one accessory. The flame of a jet lighter reaches much higher temperatures than those of other lighters or matches, though, so cigars should be held above the blue flame, avoiding any direct contact which will overheat the tobacco.
Alternatively, cigars can be lit with long matches or cedar wood splints like those which are often included in a box of cigars but which can also be bought separately. The smell of the burning cedar adds to the pleasure of the ritual, for beginners and experienced cigar smokers alike.
If your lighter does not have an integrated cutter, you will need a cigar cutter. Simple versions are available at minimal cost. Ideally, you should look for a model with a double blade. The quality of the blades will determine how clean the cut is.
If you do not intend to smoke the cigars within a few days of purchase, you really should consider purchasing a humidor. See also Which humidor is recommended for beginners?.
With this, the beginner is suitably equipped. Over time, as your enthusiasm for cigars grows, you can add the following to your smoking equipment: a cigar ashtray, cigar case and an electronic humidification system.
